ECB to continue easing monetary policy in 2025 |
Zagreb, 23.12.2024 |
 |
The European Central Bank (ECB) will continue to ease monetary policy in 2025, Governing Council member Boris Vujčič said. TASR reports this based on a report by Bloomberg.
"The trend is clear, it is a continuation of the direction from 2024, and that means further interest rate cuts," the governor of the Croatian National Bank said in an interview with state television HRT 1.
The ECB cut rates more than a week ago (on Thursday, December 12) for the fourth time since June, when it launched its easing cycle, and left the door open for further cuts as the eurozone grapples with political instability at home and fears a trade war with the United States. The Governing Council cut its main interest rates by 25 basis points.
"I don't know how long the ECB will cut rates," Vujcic said. "That will depend on the data, especially the inflation rate, whether it slows down according to our projections and whether we see the impact of monetary policy transmission, and on our projections."
One of the biggest uncertainties for further forecasts is the threat of tariffs after Donald Trump returns to the White House next month.
"If there is a trade war, it will negatively affect growth in Europe and the rest of the world," Vujcic said, adding that trade wars usually support price increases. "We hope there is no trade war, that would not be good for anyone."odkaz na stránku |
