Russia has stopped gas transit to Europe through Ukraine
Moscow, 02.01.2025
Russian gas company Gazprom stopped Russian gas supplies via Ukraine to Europe and Moldova at 08:00 Moscow time (05:00 CET) on Wednesday. It did so as a result of Ukraine's non-renewal of the transit agreement. TASR reports on the basis of a report by the TASS agency referring to Gazprom's statement. "As Ukraine has repeatedly and unequivocally refused to extend this agreement, Gazprom has lost its technical and legal capacity to transit gas through Ukraine as of January 1, 2025. Russian gas supplies through Ukraine stopped at 08:00 Moscow time," the statement said. The suspension of transit was also confirmed by the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy. The agreement on the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory envisaged the pumping of 40 billion cubic meters per year. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that there will definitely be no new contract, as it will not be possible to negotiate it so shortly before January 1, TASS writes. RIA Novosti noted that the Balkan Stream pipeline, leading from Turkey to Hungary, remained the only distribution route for gas from Russia to Europe. It transports approximately 14-15 billion cubic meters of gas annually to Romania, Greece, North Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary. According to Economy Minister Denisa Saková, Slovakia is technically well prepared to stop gas supplies from Russia via Ukraine. The state-owned company SPP has 20 percent more gas stored in underground storage facilities than a year ago. In addition, the storage facilities contracted by SPP are practically 100 percent full at the end of December, which is not standard in this period. The state-owned gas company has a diversified portfolio of gas supplies from five other major international energy suppliers, such as BP, Exxon Mobil, Shell, RWE and ENI. Ukraine has announced for a long time that it does not intend to extend the agreement on the transit of Russian oil. He justifies his position by the war with Russia and the fact that he partially finances it by selling it. odkaz na stránku
