Trump Denies Washington Post Report on Tariff Plans
Washington, 07.01.2025
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has denied a Washington Post report that instead of universal tariffs on all imports, he is considering tariffs only on key sectors. And on his platform Truth Social, he called the news "fake". TASR reports on the basis of a report by Bloomberg. The Washington Post, citing three anonymous sources, said that discussions are underway to impose tariffs only on certain sectors that are vital to national or economic security. This would be a significant change from the promises he made during the 2024 election campaign. The report drew a strong positive reaction from European stocks and currencies on Monday, as it represents the new Trump administration's less aggressive tariff policy. Trump, who is due to take office on January 20, promised tariffs of 10% on all imports except Chinese during the election campaign, on which he wants tariffs of up to 60%. And he also threatened tariffs of 25% on imports from Mexico and Canada unless they do more to stem the flow of migrants and fentanyl to the U.S. Experts have warned that such tariffs could disrupt trade flows, increase costs and trigger retaliation against U.S. exports. The Washington Post said in its report that these plans are still under discussion and are not finalized. The newspaper did not specify which sectors the tariffs should apply to. According to the sources, preliminary discussions focused mainly on several key sectors that Trump's team wants to bring back to the US. These include the defence supply chain, critical medical supplies and energy. The newspaper quoted two people as saying that these sectors could include tariffs on steel, iron, aluminum and copper, syringes, needles, medicines and pharmaceutical materials, and within the energy sector, batteries, rare earth minerals and solar panels. "The Washington Post incorrectly states that my tariff policy will be limited. This is wrong," Trump wrote, without specifying his plans. odkaz na stránku
