| Canada will not join the United States "even by mistake" and become its 51st state, outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said. TASR reports based on a report by the DPA agency published on Tuesday.
Trudeau's remarks were in response to US President-elect Donald Trump, who on Tuesday once again took aim at his northern neighbor and close ally.
"Canada will not become part of the United States even by mistake. Workers and communities in both our countries benefit enormously from our countries being each other's largest trading and security partners," said Trudeau, who announced his resignation as Canadian prime minister on Monday via the social platform X after disputes within the party, DPA reported.
Trump had said hours earlier that he would use "economic pressure" to bring Canada into the United States. He did so during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. He also refused to rule out the use of military force to take over Panama, although he ruled out using it in the case of Canada, DPA reports.
"Canada and the United States would be something. We would get rid of the artificially drawn line, and when you look at what it looks like, it would be much better for national security," Trump said, adding that the United States did not need to import cars from Canada because "I would rather have them made in Detroit."odkaz na stránku |
