Slovakia may be most threatened by US tariffs
Bratislava, 13.01.2025
Slovakia is among the EU countries that could be most significantly affected by the introduction of import tariffs by the new US administration under Donald Trump. Economists and the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) agree on this. This is related to the great openness of the Slovak economy and the structure of exports, as the new tariffs could significantly burden the automotive sector. Trump takes office in just a few days, on January 20 of this year, and he has been talking about introducing tariffs in order to protect the American market from foreign competition for a long time.According to Baláž, Trump is trying to achieve several goals at once by doing so. As part of the negotiations, he may ask Europe, for example, to spend more on its defense, thereby relieving the US federal budget. "He wants to reduce spending on US foreign defense activities and at the same time reduce imports from abroad. Where that balance ultimately occurs will really depend on the specific negotiations," the economist added.odkaz na stránku
