Ukraine's only coking coal mine halts production |
Kyjev, 14.01.2025 |
 |
Ukraine's only coking coal mine, located near the eastern city of Pokrovsk, has stopped production, two Ukrainian industry sources told Reuters, citing the approach of Russian troops.
"Mining has completely stopped," one of the sources said. The Pokrovsk mine is the only mine producing coking coal, which is key to steelmaking. The situation at the mine has led the steel industry to expect a sharp drop in output this year after a surge in steel production last year.
According to Reuters, Ukraine produced 7.58 million tons of steel last year. This represents a 21.6% increase compared to 2023.
Despite an increase of more than a fifth, this is still a low volume compared to the pre-war period, as after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, steel production in 2022 fell by as much as 70.7% to 6.3 million tons. In 2023, it fell again, to 6 million tons. Moreover, steelmakers warned last fall that the possible closure of the Pokrovsk mine could reduce steel production in 2025 to two to three million tons.odkaz na stránku |
