Trnavský Slad geographical indication and inclusion in the EC PGI register |
Trnava - Brusel, 28.01.2025 |
 |
The EU geographical indication systems protect the specific know-how, authenticity and agri-environmental conditions of products from EU Member States. Geographical indications include protected geographical indications (PGI) and protected designations of origin (PDO). These systems protect the name of a product that comes from a specific region and is the result of a specific traditional production process.
The Commission clarified that Trnava malt from the Slovak Republic has been included in the PGI register.
According to an EC press release, Trnava malt manufactured in Lycos - Malt is a light barley malt intended primarily for the production of beer. It is obtained from barley varieties grown on the Trnava Plain, in the north-eastern part of the Danube Plain. The cultivation of malting barley has a long tradition in this region, dating back to the 16th century.
Slovakia is among the ten largest malt exporters in the world. It ranks fifth in the European Union after France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. In January of this year, Heineken Slovensko Sladovne pointed this out.
