European Commission does not link restoration of Russian gas to negotiations on Ukraine
Brusel, 31.01.2025
The European Commission (EC) refuses to link the possibility of resuming Russian natural gas supplies to the European Union (EU) with peace talks on Ukraine. TASR reports this based on a report by the TASS agency, which quoted Commission spokeswoman Anita Hipper. On Thursday in Brussels, the spokeswoman responded to journalists' request for a statement on a report by the Financial Times (FT), according to which several EU member states have proposed including the resumption of Russian gas supplies to Europe in the text of a future agreement on settling the conflict in Ukraine. "We do not link this in any way with peace talks. When such negotiations take place, they will be with Ukraine. We do not confirm any connection between gas supplies and peace talks," Hipper said. The FT reported earlier on Thursday that the idea of including the issue of resumption of Russian gas supplies to Europe through pipelines in the text of a future agreement on settling the conflict in Ukraine was supported by several representatives of Germany, Hungary and some other EU member states. According to them, gas supplies from the Russian Federation would reduce energy prices in the EU and "give both sides a reason to adhere to the ceasefire agreement," the daily reported, citing sources in European capitals.odkaz na stránku
