The discussion must focus on the real challenges facing Slovakia |

The business association Klub 500 rejects the spread of claims that Slovakia is heading towards withdrawal from the European Union (EU). According to the association, government policy in no way leads to such a step and considers protests based on this narrative unfounded. It appeals for the political discussion to focus on the real challenges that Slovakia faces, in particular on improving the business environment, energy security and strategic economic decisions in the context of growing global uncertainty.
"Slovakia, as an industrial and export-oriented economy, cannot function in an environment of constant political polarization and artificially created conflicts. We are part of the EU, which is our key economic space, and leaving it would be an economic disaster. Instead of unnecessarily inciting fear and protests that undermine investor confidence and the stability of the business environment, it is necessary to focus on strengthening Slovakia's competitiveness," said in a statement by Klub 500's executive director Tibor Gregor.
The risks to Slovak industry and the economy do not come from within, but from without, according to the association. It pointed to the emerging trade war between the United States and the rest of the world, which could have far-reaching consequences for Slovakia as well. Threatening tariffs on European products, including cars, steel and other industrial products, could negatively affect exporters, reduce investment and threaten jobs. Combined with high energy prices and increasing regulation in the EU, Slovak companies are finding themselves in a situation where competitiveness is increasingly under pressure, according to the 500 Club.
"We also view with great concern the change in Ukraine's position regarding gas supplies to Slovakia. Ukraine will no longer allow the transit of Russian gas through its territory from 2025, thereby threatening the energy security of several countries, including Slovakia. We find it paradoxical that Slovakia is among the largest supporters of Ukraine in proportion to its GDP, and yet we are exposed to unilateral steps that have serious economic consequences," stated Gregor.
"The 500 Club welcomes the fact that the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Robert Fico, is actively defending the economic interests of Slovakia at the European level and is promoting measures that ensure the stability of not only the Slovak but also the European economy. It is important for Slovakia to play an active role in the EU, defend its national interests and at the same time support solutions that contribute to the overall prosperity of the single European market," added the executive director.
