The EU's vision for agriculture and food, presented by the European Commission on Wednesday (19 February), focuses mainly on agriculture, offering few concrete measures to support Europe's 304,000 food and drink businesses. It is supposed to mainly support small and medium-sized enterprises, but according to the Food Chamber of Slovakia (PKS), it falls short of the expectations of the food and drink industry as a whole.
"As the largest manufacturing sector in Europe, the food and drink industry buys 70% of all EU agricultural products and transforms them into safe, high-quality and nutritious products. The food and drink industry has a symbiotic relationship with EU agriculture and faces many of the same challenges, which means its needs should also be addressed appropriately," the PKS said.
According to it, the vision lacks concrete measures to support the food and drink industry, whether it is to free up investment, integrate innovation or reduce bureaucracy. It also stressed that this vision does not address the investments needed for all forms of sustainable agriculture to address emissions along the entire supply chain. It also fails to recognise the need for fairness for all actors in supply chain relationships, not just farmers and regardless of their size.
“While parts of the vision focus on the food sector, they place expectations on food producers without matching the requirements to support innovation and investment. Questioning the role of food processing in contributing to affordability, longevity, safety and the prevention of food waste is just one example,” added PKS, adding that this approach could jeopardise the competitiveness and transformation of European food and drink producers at a time when many businesses are currently facing significant economic and regulatory pressures.
