| Italian Industry Confederation: Trump is trying to deindustrialize Europe |

| The imposition of tariffs threatened by US President Donald Trump would seriously affect companies and the workforce in the European Union (EU), said Emanuele Orsini, president of the Italian industry federation Confindustria, on Thursday. TASR reports this based on a report by Reuters.
Trump said on Wednesday (26. 2.) that his administration would soon announce the introduction of a 25 percent tariff on imports of goods from the EU, including cars. "The threat does not only concern the impact on trade dynamics. The truth is much more dramatic. What is coming from the US leadership is an attack on European companies and jobs," Orsini said in a statement. Trump's trade policy aims to "deindustrialize" the European continent, he added, calling on the European Commission (EC) to consider "extraordinary measures for extraordinary times".
Industry Minister Adolfo Urso, a member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Brothers of Italy party, struck a more conciliatory tone, saying a trade war needed to be avoided, while calling for unity among Western allies. “This is not the time to divide the West, this is the time to unite the West, because the challenges of the West are common,” Urso told reporters on Thursday. “Italy is of course concerned about the possible escalation in the event of a trade war, because we are a major exporting country,” he added.
Italy’s central bank governor Fabio Panetta said this month that the full imposition of the tariffs that Trump had talked about before the US election, plus EU retaliation, would cut the bloc’s growth by half a percentage point, with Germany and Italy hit hardest.
The European Commission said on Wednesday that the EU would “respond decisively and immediately to unjustified obstacles to free and fair trade, including when tariffs are used to undermine legitimate and non-discriminatory policies.”odkaz na stránku |
