The malfunctioning of the EU single market is putting the Union at risk
Bratislava, 03.03.2025
The continued fragmentation of the European Union's (EU) single market threatens its efficiency, competitiveness and ability to effectively serve consumers. Divergent national regulations and inconsistent enforcement of intellectual property rights pose challenges for manufacturers, the Slovak Association for Branded Products (SZZV) said on Friday. "We highlight how divergent rules on packaging, labelling, intellectual property and unfair trading practices hinder the free movement of goods, increase costs for businesses and limit choice for consumers. Divergent national packaging regulations force manufacturers to create multiple versions of the same product, which increases production costs and environmental waste," the association said. Furthermore, inconsistent enforcement of intellectual property rights, according to the SZZV, creates barriers for brands and makes it difficult to protect innovations from counterfeiting. Unfair trading practices also remain a problem, according to brand manufacturers, as differences in national rules affect suppliers' ability to compete fairly in EU markets. To address these issues and strengthen the single market, brand manufacturers have called on the European Commission and policymakers to align regulations, increase digitalisation, strengthen enforcement mechanisms, improve stakeholder engagement and improve cross-border cooperation. The association's members are convinced that a well-functioning single market is essential for ensuring Europe's competitiveness on the global stage. "By eliminating fragmentation, embracing harmonisation and supporting innovation, policymakers can ensure a resilient and dynamic economic environment that benefits both businesses and consumers," concluded the SZZV. The Slovak Association for Branded Products brings together companies that directly employ more than 8,000 people in Slovakia. The total sales of member companies in Slovakia in 2022 were more than EUR 1.5 billion. odkaz na stránku
