Italy wants to connect the automotive, defense and aerospace sectors
Roma, 17.03.2025
Italy is preparing an industrial plan to boost links between the automotive, defense and aerospace sectors, Industry Minister Adolfo Urso said on Sunday. TASR reported this based on a report by Reuters. The plan, which Rome wants to present in June, comes amid European discussions on increasing defense spending and possible joint financing of the army. "In June, when the direction of the reforms we are defining in Europe is clear, we will present the first industrial strategy document in 30 years, which will lead the country to new development opportunities," Urso told the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero. According to him, cooperation between the sectors will create opportunities for growth in engineering and component manufacturing, as car production in the country will decline. European defense companies are confident they can increase production, but warn that delivery times could stretch for years and will depend on government support for spending and new contracts. Rheinmetall, Europe’s largest munitions maker, said last month it intended to convert two car plants in Germany to produce defense equipment. It has started a joint venture with Italian company Leonardo to produce military combat vehicles, which Urso said is in line with Italy’s policy of “creating European champions with a manufacturing base in Italy.” The Italian government is seeking to create a system that guarantees encrypted communications between government, diplomats and defense officials in high-risk areas. Elon Musk’s Starlink is among those interested in providing such a system. Rome is also in talks with OneWeb, part of the Franco-British group Eutelsat. Urso also pointed to Italy’s efforts to create a domestic satellite service. The national space agency is nearing completion of a feasibility study on building “low-orbit satellites that will also ensure national security.” odkaz na stránku
