Russia plans to launch large-scale lithium production in 2030 |
Moscow, 18.03.2025 |

Russia plans to produce at least 60,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate by 2030 as it seeks to reduce its dependence on imports and increase production of high-capacity electric batteries, the Ministry of Natural Resources said on Monday. TASR reported this based on a Reuters report.
Lithium and other critical minerals, including rare earth metals, have gained global attention as US President Donald Trump seeks to counter China's dominance in the sector by offering contracts to Ukraine and Russia.
Lithium, a very light and soft metal essential for making batteries for electric vehicles, is included in a list of 50 minerals that the US Geological Survey considers critically important. Russia has announced that it has 3.5 million tons of lithium oxide reserves.
The US Geological Survey estimated Russia's lithium reserves at about one million tons in 2024, ranking 14th in the world. Lithium oxide contains about a third of pure lithium, and lithium carbonate about 20 percent. “Industrial lithium production in the country will begin in 2030,” the ministry said. President Vladimir Putin said last month that Russia should accelerate its plans to mine lithium.
Demand for lithium has surged in recent years as Russian companies work to mass produce lithium batteries and electric vehicles.
“The country has traditionally imported lithium, and now it is crucial to quickly launch facilities and increase the extraction and processing of this strategically important resource for the economy,” the ministry added.
The ministry has already issued exploration permits for three large lithium deposits, Kolmoserskoye and Polmostundrovskoye, in the Murmansk region in northwestern Russia, and a third is in the Tuva region, which borders Mongolia.
All three deposits and their adjacent production facilities are expected to be operational by 2030, the ministry said. In 2023, Russia extracted just 27 tons of lithium as a byproduct from the emerald deposit in the Ural Mountains.
The Kolmoserskoye deposit contains one-quarter of Russia's known lithium reserves.
