Italy warns of escalation in trade dispute with US
Roma, 20.03.2025
Italy will ask the European Union (EU) to prepare compensatory measures for sectors hit by US tariffs. Rome fears a trade war and has therefore called on Brussels to respond appropriately to the tariffs and prevent escalation. TASR reports this based on a report by the APA agency. "We will ask the EU to adopt compensatory measures for the affected sectors," Industry Minister Adolfo Urso said in the Chamber of Deputies on Wednesday. According to Urso, a trade war that would have global consequences must be avoided. He stressed that the US is Italy's most important trading partner outside the EU. Therefore, he called on Brussels to respond appropriately to the tariffs and prevent escalation. Washington imposed tariffs on steel and aluminium last week and the EU presented plans for retaliatory measures. US President Donald Trump subsequently threatened to impose 200 percent tariffs on wine and alcohol imports from the EU. "We must be careful and responsible before we react, we must use our excellent relations with the US government to avoid escalating threats and subsequent retaliation," Urso said. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Tuesday (March 18) warned her European partners against retaliatory tariffs that would escalate the trade dispute with the US.odkaz na stránku
