Trump announces tariffs on countries buying Venezuelan oil and gas |
Washington, 24.03.2025 |
 |
US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he would impose a 25% flat tariff on any country that buys oil or gas from Venezuela. This "secondary tariff" will take effect on April 2, he said in a post on the social network Truth Social. TASR reports this based on reports by AFP and Reuters.
Since January, when Trump returned to the White House, he has imposed tariffs on both US allies and enemies in an attempt to strengthen the economy through a financial mechanism.
"Venezuela has been very hostile to the United States and the freedoms we profess," he wrote on his social network Truth Social.
"Therefore, any country that buys oil and/or gas from Venezuela will be forced to pay the United States a 25% tariff on any trade they do with our country."
Trump said the United States would impose secondary tariffs on countries that buy Venezuelan oil "for a number of reasons, including the fact that they have purposely sent tens of thousands of criminals to the United States."
"All paperwork will be signed and registered and the tariffs will go into effect on April 2, 2025, Independence Day," Trump wrote.
Trump is marking the date that reciprocal tariffs are set to go into effect on all countries that have imposed tariffs on imports from the United States. He is doing so to "correct trade practices that Washington considers unfair."
Trump has already imposed tariffs on major trading partners including China, Canada and Mexico, citing trade imbalances and their failure to stop the flow of deadly fentanyl into the United States.
In early March, the United States gave energy giant Chevron one month to halt its operations in Venezuela, a blow to the cash-strapped country.
