Strengthening cooperation with Bulgaria
Sofia, 25.03.2025
The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Juraj Blanár, met with Bulgarian representatives on Monday and highlighted the friendly and constructive dialogue based on the historical and cultural proximity of the countries. The main topics of the discussions were strengthening cooperation, trade partnership and tourism, as well as supporting Bulgaria's entry into the eurozone and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). TASR was informed about this by the communications department of the Slovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "We are interested in intensive relations with Bulgaria. Our open discussion testifies to excellent cooperation on the cultural and social level, for example through the Bulgarian school operating in Bratislava," said Blanár. During the meeting with his Bulgarian counterpart, Georgi Georgiev, Blanár highlighted the partnership of both countries within the EU, which he wants to support "at all levels where we have a common interest". The ministers agreed on the need for closer cooperation in protecting the Schengen borders in connection with illegal migration and also on issues of EU defense capability. The partners also expressed interest in intensifying mutual activities in supporting tourism. Blanár emphasized Slovakia's support for Bulgaria's entry into the eurozone and the OECD. During his visit, he also met with Bulgarian President Rumen Radev. The Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs thanked his Bulgarian partners for the opportunity to transport purchased Russian natural gas through their territory via the TurkStream gas pipeline, whose transit through Ukrainian territory had been stopped. He also highlighted Bulgaria's support at the European Council meeting in the discussion on reopening transportation through Ukraine. As part of his Monday trip to Sofia, Blanár also visited the Bulgarian Parliament, where he held talks with its Speaker Natalija Kiselova, the Chair of the Energy Committee Pavela Mitova, and the Vice-Chair of the European Affairs Committee Tom Bikov. odkaz na stránku
