Negotiations to resume Nord Stream gas pipelines worry EU
Brusel, 28.03.2025
European Union (EU) member states are concerned that Russia and the United States are negotiating the renewal of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines without their participation. TASR reports this based on a report by the TASS agency, which referred to the news portal Politico. Diplomatic sources from the EU told the portal that holding such negotiations without the participation of European states is outrageous and also expressed concerns that the administration of US President Donald Trump is trying to gain new leverage over Brussels. “They want to corner us by creating another layer of dependence. This is economic imperialism,” said one of the diplomats. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday (March 26) that Moscow and Washington are discussing the topic of the gas pipelines. It will be interesting to see whether the United States will use its influence on Europe and force it not to reject Russian gas, Lavrov said on Russian state television. Nord Stream 2, a project worth around $11 billion (€10.2 billion), was completed in 2021 to transport gas from Russia across the Baltic Sea to Germany. However, it has not been put into operation as relations between Berlin and Moscow deteriorated significantly before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the US imposed sanctions on the pipeline. In September 2022, an explosion on the pipeline damaged one of the two branches. Another explosion damaged both branches of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which had previously supplied Russian gas to Germany for several years. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, which the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office is investigating as an act of international terrorism. It is currently impossible to determine a timeframe for the restoration of the pipelines’ functionality, TASS reported. (1 EUR = 1.0788 USD)odkaz na stránku
