| US increases tariffs on Chinese imports to 104% from midnight |

| The United States is increasing tariffs on imports from China to 104% and these will take effect shortly after midnight, the White House confirmed. TASR reports this based on a report by the Reuters agency.
Trump threatened on Monday (7 April) to increase tariffs on imports from China by another 50% if Beijing does not lift retaliatory tariffs of 34%, which Chinese officials have rejected.
US stocks weakened after this news, erasing previous gains. Global markets had previously revived thanks to hopes that Trump might be willing to negotiate a reduction in the number of trade barriers for individual countries and products.
After announcing the increase in tariffs on China, Washington also said that it was urgently trying to start negotiations with other trading partners that are subject to the tariffs announced by President Donald Trump.
The Trump administration is scheduled to hold talks with South Korea and Japan, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is expected to visit them next week.
However, the White House has made it clear that the announced tariffs of up to 50% for individual countries will still go into effect shortly after midnight Eastern Time (06:01 CEST) as planned.
