NewCleo and JAVYS sign joint venture agreement |
Roma, 04.06.2025 |
 |
Representatives of the innovative European company NewCleo and the Slovak state-owned Nuclear and Decommissioning Company (JAVYS) have signed a shareholders' agreement to establish a joint venture called the Center for the Development of Spent Nuclear Fuel Utilization (CVP). This represents another step towards the construction of four advanced modular reactors of the IV generation in Jaslovské Bohunice. The companies signed the agreement in Rome.
JAVYS will own 51 percent and NewCleo 49 percent of the shares in the newly established joint venture. The company will focus on the development of the project to build four LFR-AS-200 reactors with a total capacity of 800 MWe in the Jaslovské Bohunice location.
"These reactors will use MOX fuel as an energy source, made from spent nuclear fuel from existing nuclear reactors in Slovakia," the companies said. They explained that the spent nuclear fuel would be reprocessed in France and then used to produce new fuel rods in a planned French MOX facility owned by NewCleo. These would then be used to generate electricity in advanced LFR-AS-200 reactors, thus achieving a closed fuel cycle.
This new operating model, according to the companies, aims to shape the future of nuclear energy by creating complementary industrial synergies between thermal and fast reactors, while exploiting the potential of fourth-generation reactors in nuclear fuel reuse and closing the fuel cycle. NewCleo intends to use this model as an example for other countries with nuclear reactors or older spent fuel on how to use the originally waste product in a sustainable way.
“Today we are at the birth of a new model in the nuclear energy sector, where public and private companies are working together to achieve a closed fuel cycle. This project demonstrates that the future of nuclear energy lies in the intelligent use of existing resources,” said Stefano Buono, founder and CEO of NewCleo. According to him, spent nuclear fuel ceases to be a problem and instead represents a solution for improving Europe’s energy security and independence. “With this step, Slovakia becomes a pioneer in the field of a closed fuel cycle,” Buono added.
The companies further pointed out that by successfully adapting the multiple recycling model through LFR technology, existing spent nuclear fuel could meet Europe’s energy needs for thousands of years. Its reprocessing would reduce the volume of existing nuclear waste and its radiotoxicity. This would also lead to a significant reduction in the volume of long-lived nuclear material, which requires economically demanding storage in deep geological repositories, they stated.
After its establishment, the CVP joint venture will immediately begin work on a comprehensive feasibility study for the deployment of LFR-AS-200 reactors in Jaslovské Bohunice. In parallel, NewCleo will continue to cooperate with the French government to secure the route for the supply of spent nuclear fuel and build up capacities for its reprocessing at the company’s French plant.
“Our goal is to create a solution that will not only strengthen Slovakia in terms of energy, but will also be a model for the entire European region in the area of safe and efficient use of spent nuclear fuel,” said Peter Gerhart, Chairman of the Board of Directors of JAVYS.odkaz na stránku |
