Mercosur discusses request to postpone signing of agreement with EU
Brazil, 19.12.2025
The Mercosur association will consider Italy's request to postpone the signing of the EU-South America free trade agreement at its weekend meeting. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced this on Thursday after a phone call with Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni. TASR reports this based on a report by the AFP agency. The Prime Minister asked the President to "be patient for a week, ten days, a month and Italy will be ready for an agreement," Lula said, adding that the South American bloc would discuss the request. Their decision will likely be influenced by the ongoing EU summit in Brussels. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for a quick agreement so that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa can travel to Brazil and sign the agreement there. French President Emmanuel Macron, on the other hand, wants to postpone the decision. Meloni said on Wednesday (17 December) that signing the agreement in the coming days would be premature, as work still needs to be done on guarantees for Italian farmers. French President Macron also confirmed his opposition to the accelerated signing of the document on Thursday. The EU-Mercosur trade agreement aims to strengthen trade between the EU and the four countries of the association, namely Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. According to the European Commission, the intended free trade area will be the largest of its kind in the world. For the agreement to enter into force, the consent of a qualified majority of EU member states is required. This means that at least 15 countries, which together account for at least 65% of the Union's population, would have to vote in favour of it. Italy's consent is considered crucial to securing the necessary majority. odkaz na stránku
