| EU to start implementing trade and customs agreement with Mercosur from 1 May |
| EU, 23.03.2026 |
 |
| The European Union notified Mercosur countries on Monday of the activation of the instrument for the provisional application of the EU-Mercosur Interim Trade Agreement (iTA). The trade and customs agreement will be provisionally applied from 1 May 2026, the European Commission (EC) said, according to the Brussels-based TASR correspondent.
The Commission recalled that by sending its "note verbale" to Paraguay, the legal guardian of the Mercosur treaties, it had taken the last procedural step necessary for the provisional application of the agreement, in accordance with the decision of the EU Council (Member States) of 9 January this year.
The interim trade agreement will be provisionally applied from 1 May between the EU and all Mercosur countries that complete their ratification procedures and notify the EU by the end of March, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay having already done so. Paraguay recently ratified the agreement and is expected to send its notification soon.
Provisional application ensures the elimination of tariffs on certain products from day one, creating predictable rules for trade and investment. EU businesses, consumers and farmers can immediately start reaping the benefits of the agreement, while sensitive sectors of the EU economy are fully protected by robust safeguards.
European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič said in a press release that this is an important step towards demonstrating the EU's credibility as a major trading partner.
"The priority now is to turn the EU-Mercosur agreement into concrete results. These will give EU exporters the platform they need to seize new opportunities for trade, growth and jobs. Provisional application of the agreement will allow us to start delivering on this promise. I look forward to the agreement fulfilling its potential, strengthening our economy and consolidating our position in world trade, while we complete all the necessary democratic procedures," Šefčovič said.
The provisional application of the trade agreement will also ensure stronger cooperation between the EU and Mercosur on pressing global issues such as labour rights and climate change. It will create more resilient and reliable supply chains, which are crucial in particular for the predictable flow of critical raw materials.
The Commission has indicated that European exporters can learn more about how to benefit from the agreement through the Access2Markets platform (https://trade.ec.europa.eu/access-to-markets/en/home), where it will soon make all the necessary information available.odkaz na stránku |
