Australia and the EU sign a free trade agreement
Canberra, 24.03.2026
Australia and the European Union signed a free trade agreement in Canberra, Australia, on Tuesday that will reciprocally eliminate tariffs on almost all goods. A framework document on a security and defence partnership was also signed, which supports cooperation on common security challenges - including the defence industry, cyber and economic security and the fight against terrorism. AFP reported, TASR writes. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who signed the documents in Canberra, welcomed the conclusion of the negotiations and confirmed that both will now continue with the national processes necessary for the agreement to be ratified and enter into force. According to EU Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič, the agreement is "very ambitious". Almost all goods will be liberalised, with the exception of steel on both sides. The free trade agreement will allow Australian exporters to sell 30,000 to 35,000 tonnes of beef to the EU annually, up from the current quota of 3,389 tonnes. Red meat exports to Europe are expected to increase tenfold. Producers will also be able to use traditional names such as prosecco for wine, feta or halloumi for cheese, despite long-standing European pressure to restrict them. The agreement will strengthen economic resilience, support growth and confirm Australia and the EU's shared commitment to open and rules-based trade, the two statesmen said. A framework partnership on security and defence will also ensure closer cooperation on challenges such as cybersecurity, the defence industry and counter-terrorism measures. According to Brussels, the agreement will increase access for European service providers and companies to the Australian market, create better, more predictable and favourable conditions for entrepreneurs and companies wishing to invest in the partner country, and improve the predictability of conditions for trade in critical raw materials and cars. odkaz na stránku
