Fico held talks with Söder, described Bavaria as an important partner
Mníchov, 11.05.2026
Bavaria is an important trading partner for Slovakia, and we export more to this German federal state than to France, Italy, the Netherlands or even the United States, said Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) on Thursday in a speech at the Slovak-Bavarian Business and Expert Conference, reports a special correspondent of TASR. The Prime Minister spoke at the conference after a meeting with Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder. According to him, it was an extremely open and detailed conversation. According to Fico, he discussed areas important for both Bavaria and Slovakia with the Bavarian Prime Minister, such as the automotive industry. According to the Prime Minister, the Slovak government rejects the "ideological goal" of ending the production of combustion engines in 2035-2036. “And looking at what is happening in China, we must focus primarily on those areas where we can not only compete, but also be better, and these are certainly hybrids and diesel engines,” he stated. According to Fico, Germany and Slovakia belong to the “group of friends of car manufacturing”. He described car manufacturing as one of the key pillars of European industry, and this “pearl” must be protected. He mentioned that Slovakia produces the most cars per capita in the world. “Today it is already more than one million cars, but after the opening of another Volvo car factory, it will perhaps be 1.3-1.4 million cars per year,” he claims. “We are closely monitoring the change in mood in Germany regarding nuclear energy. I have offered the Prime Minister cooperation. Because, with all modesty, I dare to declare here that Slovakia is a world leader in nuclear energy,” said the Slovak Prime Minister. According to Fico, Slovakia is convinced that it cannot cope with the challenge associated with the pressure on energy consumption without nuclear power plants. "Already, 85 percent of all electricity in Slovakia is 'carbon free', clean. We have completely stopped producing electricity from brown coal. And if we manage to fulfill the plan in 2040, to open another nuclear power plant with an output of 1,200 megawatts," he continued. He also mentioned the Green Deal, stating that the result of this agreement cannot be that the European Union becomes a cultural open-air museum. Therefore, the Slovak government will support all reforms that can mitigate overly ideological and ambitious climate goals. He also spoke with Söder about electricity prices, which, according to him, is a topic that everyone in the EU considers to be the most urgent. In this context, Fico mentioned huge differences, while in completely Western countries such as Spain, Portugal, and France, the price of electricity is very low, while in the area where Slovakia is located, it is extremely high. According to the Prime Minister, the Slovak Republic is not able to provide as much support to sectors from the national budget as Bavaria or Germany as a whole can. He stated that such an approach will further deepen the differences in the European Union. Another topic of conversation between the Prime Ministers of the Slovak Republic and Bavaria was arms production. Fico stated in his speech that Slovakia is a top producer of ammunition of all calibers and has innovative elements in the arms industry. "Since we know Bavaria's dominant position when it comes to arms, I think that in addition to energy and the automotive industry, this area should also be the focus of our bilateral attention," the Prime Minister stated. Fico noted that his visit is of particular importance because it is the first visit by a Slovak Prime Minister in 27 years. He also added that the Slovak Republic as a whole has established an intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation in Bavaria.odkaz na stránku
