Nippon Steel takes direct ownership of U. S. Steel Košice
Košice, 14.05.2026
Nippon Steel Corporation has decided to transfer the Košice steelworks U. S. Steel to its direct ownership. U. S. Steel Košice (USSK) will thus become a fully owned subsidiary of Nippon Steel. The transfer to direct ownership is scheduled for October 1, with a name change to Nippon Steel Slovakia. This was announced by Nippon Steel, Japan's largest steel producer. The Košice steelworks will be the main production center in Europe in the corporation's global strategy. "By directly owning USSK, Nippon Steel establishes USSK as a key center for its European operations within its global strategy and will be directly involved in increasing profitability and accelerating the growth of its European business," the company said. As it further stated, since the beginning of its operations in 1965, the Košice Steelworks has contributed to the development of European industry by supplying high-quality steel products to a wide range of sectors, including the automotive, electrical, packaging, energy and construction industries, primarily in Central and Eastern Europe. “Based on the strategic advantage of the location of the production facilities, the diverse portfolio of flat-rolled products, the strong customer structure, the highly qualified workforce and the quality facilities that USSK has built up over the years, Nippon Steel has been working since the acquisition of U. S. Steel in 2025 to strengthen USSK’s competitiveness by further promoting sharing and cooperation on technologies, human resources, sales and purchasing networks,” the company informed. It described the European steel market as the third largest in the world after China and the United States, and it is a mature market with a high demand for high-quality steel, for which Nippon Steel can use its state-of-the-art product technologies. In particular, Central and Eastern Europe is expected to see continued economic growth and increased demand for high-quality steel as customers shift their production bases, according to the company. Europe is undergoing major structural transformation due to decarbonization trends and geopolitical uncertainties. “It is also a market with a high degree of self-sufficiency within the region due to factors such as tariffs, safeguards and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Nippon Steel therefore considers it important to be a direct part of a market with growing demand,” the company said. Takahiro Mori, CEO of Nippon Steel and Chairman of the Board of Directors of U. S. Steel, expressed respect for the 60-year history of the Košice ironworks, the operating results and the development of USSK. “Going forward, Nippon Steel will continue to leverage the state-of-the-art technologies and management resources of USSK to strengthen its business base, while supporting medium- and long-term investments, including decarbonization initiatives. Through these efforts, we will continue to contribute to European industry and our customers,” he said. U. S. Steel President David B. Burritt also commented on the Košice plant, saying that it has been an important and valuable part of U. S. Steel’s global operations since 2000. “With the anticipated transfer of ownership approaching, we are confident that USSK will have a strong future as part of Nippon Steel. Nippon is one of the world’s most respected steelmakers with strong technical expertise, a commitment to quality, and values that closely align with the culture and capabilities built at USSK over many years,” he said.odkaz na stránku
