Global wine consumption fell to a nearly 70-year low last year
Paris, 18.05.2026
US import tariffs hit the wine trade last year, sending exports to their lowest level in nearly two decades. In addition, wine consumption fell to a near 70-year low, a result of economic pressures and changing consumer tastes, Reuters reported, citing data from the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV). Global wine exports reached 94.8 million hectoliters last year. This represents a 4.7% decrease compared to 2024 and the lowest export volume since 2009. In terms of sales, exports fell by 6.7% to 33.8 billion euros, the OIV said. Global wine consumption also declined. It fell by 2.7% to 208 million hectolitres, the lowest global wine consumption since 1957. In 2024, both exports and consumption hit multi-year lows, with exports falling to their lowest levels since 2010 and consumption falling to their lowest levels since 1961. “The 2025 figures show the impact of US import tariffs, but also longer-term changes in climate and consumption to which the wine sector is trying to adapt,” said John Barker, director general of the OIV, in response to the latest figures for last year. He added that the organisation does not yet have clear evidence of the impact of the war in the Middle East on the wine sector, but expects some consequences, as the conflict is negatively affecting supplies and consumer sentiment. In light of these developments, the wine sector is trying to adapt to the new conditions and is shifting its focus more to wine tourism and sustainability. At the same time, it is trying to enter the market with products with lower alcohol content. Wine production increased last year, but only slightly, falling short of expectations. It reached 227 million hectoliters, just 0.6% more than in 2024, which was the weakest year in terms of production since 1961. Moreover, the OIV predicted at the end of last year that wine production would reach 232 million hectoliters. In addition to adverse weather, production volumes were also affected by the liquidation of vineyards in several countries, including France, which responded to falling demand. odkaz na stránku
