The new wine season is starting.
Bratislava, 08.08.2026
From Friday, consumers can officially enjoy the first Slovak burčiak. The Slovak Chamber of Agriculture and Food (SPPK) announced this, saying that Slovak grapes are exceptional this year, even though the drought has reduced the harvest. "The grapes are beautiful, healthy and in excellent condition. However, the drought has affected the size of the bunches, so we expect a significantly lower harvest. If the weather does not significantly interfere with ripening, consumers can look forward to very high-quality burčiak and wines from this year," said Lukáš Krasňanský, chairman of the Karpaty Vine and Wine Cooperative. According to the SPPK, the exceptionally warm summer accelerated the ripening of grapes by about a week, which is why our producers have applied for permission for earlier sales. The director of the Slovak Winegrowers and Winemakers Association, Jaroslava Kaňuchová Pátková, specified that this year burčiak can be officially sold from August 7 to December 31, while some winemakers produce burčiak from late-harvested or ice grapes even at the end of the season. According to Slovak winegrowers and winemakers, it is increasingly difficult to grow quality grapes today. Extreme heat, long-term lack of precipitation, pest pressure and overabundant wildlife, i.e. overall changing climatic conditions, increase the risks of cultivation and reduce the harvest. According to them, every bottle of wine or glass of burčiak from Slovak vineyards is all the more valuable. According to the legislation, the designation "burčiak" applies exclusively to a drink made from Slovak grapes, which is why it is recommended to buy it from verified domestic winemakers. The genuine product can be recognized by its fresh yellow-green color and small bubbles formed during natural fermentation. odkaz na stránku
