Russia has curtailed cryptocurrency mining |
Moscow, 20.11.2024 |
|
Russia has banned cryptocurrency mining in several Siberian regions to prevent energy shortages during the winter and restricted it in areas of Ukraine it has declared annexed. TASR reports on the basis of a Reuters report, which cited the Russian Energy Ministry on Tuesday.
The ban will apply during the winter months in three regions near Lake Baikal, where cryptocurrency mining has thrived in recent years thanks to the low cost of electricity, which is mainly produced by large hydroelectric power plants. In the annexed areas of Ukraine, a large part of the energy infrastructure has been destroyed since 2022, when Russia sent its troops there, leading to power outages.
According to official estimates, cryptocurrency mining in Russia consumes 16 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) per year, accounting for about 1.5% of the country's electricity consumption. Russia, along with the United States, China, Kazakhstan and Canada, is one of the world leaders in cryptocurrency mining.odkaz na stránku |
