The Council of Europe praised Slovakia's approach to education for children from Ukraine |

On Wednesday, International Children's Rights Day, the Council of Europe (CoE) published a study on access to education for children from Ukraine in Europe. The study also includes a section that maps the situation specifically in Slovakia, TASR reports.
The Council of Europe pointed out that language barriers, limited school capacity and difficulties in tracking out-of-school children are among the key challenges faced by millions of children from Ukraine with refuge in European countries.
In the CoE study on access to education for children from Ukraine who fled the war, Slovakia is mentioned in several contexts.
The institution reminded that Slovakia hosted a relatively high number of Ukrainian refugees – up to three percent of the total distribution of displaced Ukrainian citizens by CoE member states, mostly after Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom, Spain, Italy and Moldova. While compulsory and free education for children from Ukraine is required in all Member States, compulsory schooling is required in only more than half of them. Slovakia is not one of the countries where school attendance is compulsory for these children, but is preparing to enroll all Ukrainian students in 2025.
Enrolling in a local school can be challenging for Ukrainian families, as it involves several different steps and providing documents that they may not have. To address these challenges, Slovakia has introduced an initial assessment, based on tests that determine the year in which children continue their education.
Providing psychological support to Ukrainian children is essential because they have likely experienced trauma as a result of the war. Slovakia has introduced a trial process in which children are examined by a competent professional either during the enrolment process or at a later stage of education at school. An example of good practice in Slovakia is the setting up of the Well-U project funded by the European Commission to support the mental health of Ukrainian refugees.
Slovakia provides Ukrainian children with language courses, allows the recruitment of Ukrainian-speaking staff and teacher training in several aspects, such as how to support a child with a traumatic experience, how to welcome students from Ukraine into the school and education system. Individual or class assistants are also available.
It is also important to support children's rights to preserve their identity. Slovakia has joined the Ukrainian Library project, which ensures the distribution of Ukrainian literature in the original language and as a translation.
An example of good practice that Slovakia has introduced, according to the CoE, is the hiring of teachers who are refugees from Ukraine to schools, either as regular teachers or assistants. This helps to address the growing capacity needs in the national education system and also provides great support to Ukrainian students in maintaining their identity.odkaz na stránku |
