The decline in car production, together with Chinese competition, poses a challenge |

The decline in car production and sales in Europe by around two million vehicles compared to pre-covid levels, coupled with geopolitical challenges and Chinese competition, poses a serious challenge for European carmakers. In Slovakia, the situation is stable, as carmakers have secured production for the next three years, but they need new products to maintain competitiveness. This was pointed out by the President of the Association of the Automotive Industry (ZAP) of the Slovak Republic, Alexander Matušek, on the occasion of this year's CEE Automotive Supply Chain event.
In this context, the Association promotes three key priorities, namely reducing production costs, ensuring sufficient qualified workers and promoting the environmental sustainability of production.
Petr Novák from the Czech AutoSAP, which is a co-organizer of the event together with ZAP, also drew attention to the threat of fines for failure to meet CO2 emission targets, which could reach up to 15 billion euros. He also pointed to geopolitical risks and legislative challenges, but at the same time highlighted the record growth of Czech production, which is expected to reach 1.4 million vehicles this year. "These numbers make the Czech Republic a European exception," he said.
Representatives of the sector also said that the automotive industry is ready for an emission-free future, but the mass expansion of electromobility is hindered by insufficient demand, lack of infrastructure and complex regulation. The share of electric cars in Europe is currently expected to be at a low level. It should reach only ten percent of the total volume, while the original estimate by 2025 was at the level of 20-25%. The solution could be the adjustment of regulatory frameworks together with the actionable implementation of the action plan for the automotive industry, added representatives of the automotive industry
