The average inflation rate for the entire year 2024 reached 2.8% and after two years of extremely high double-digit values, it fell below 3%. The rate of year-on-year price growth slowed down the most in the last 25 years, the year-on-year price growth reached 10.5% in 2023 and in 2022 prices increased by as much as 12.8%. Price growth during 2024 did not exceed 4% in any month. This was reported by the Statistical Office (Ú) of the Slovak Republic.
During 2024, prices grew in all 12 main sectors of the consumer basket. Double-digit price growth above 10% was only in one sector - education. At the same time, three other sectors - health, alcoholic beverages with tobacco and restaurants with hotels - had growth above 5%. From the perspective of assessing the development, it is important that in as many as 11 sectors there was a significant year-on-year slowdown in the rate of price growth.
The most significant impact on the overall average year-on-year price increase was caused by food, which increased in price by 2.5% year-on-year. The increase in prices was reflected in 8 out of 9 monitored food components, especially bread and cereals by 4%, and vegetables and fruits (both above 3%).
The most dynamic growth was seen in the prices of food components with a lower weight, namely oils and fats by almost 9%, or sugar and confectionery by over 5%. A decrease in prices, although insignificant by 0.2%, was recorded only by milk, cheese and eggs. However, all nine food classes, with the exception of fats and oils, in 2024 moved at significantly lower price growth values than in 2023, when most items recorded increases of 15% to 23%.
