The estimated loss of Slovak milk production is 6%. |
Bratislava, 01.04.2025 |

Within three weeks, dairy cows that produced 6% of all Slovak milk will be culled in Slovakia due to foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). The related damages are estimated at approximately 7.5 to 10 million euros per 1,000 dairy cows, but these are only approximate calculations that will be further refined. Representatives of the Slovak Chamber of Agriculture and Food (SPPK) informed farmers about the current situation on Monday.
"Basically, it's just a simple calculation based on the average milk yield in Slovakia, the average price of milk, the average price of meat. We are now devoting all our energy and time to stopping and eliminating the infection, and when we succeed, which I firmly believe we will really succeed in the near future, then there will certainly be room for us to sit down and talk about the damage that was caused," explained SPPK Chairman Andrej Gajdo at a press conference. He pointed out that farms that did not cull livestock but had to invest money in, for example, disinfection and protective equipment also have increased costs.
