Salary growth stops after reaching the age of 45 |
Bratislava, 22.05.2025 |

After reaching the age of 45, salary growth for employees stops, with the exception of top managers. This year, workers aged 35 to 44 are earning the most, with an average monthly basic salary of 1,921 euros. People aged 45 to 54 earn an average of 100 euros less, which represents a decrease of almost six percent. This is according to an analysis by the Platy.sk portal, published by Alma Career.
Last year, the difference in average salary between these two age groups was the same, but in 2019 it was approximately 200 euros. "The main reason is that employees of this age have often already reached their salary ceiling within the position they hold. Without career advancement or a change of employer, further wage growth is limited. At the same time, job mobility decreases over time, older employees apply for new opportunities less often, thereby preparing themselves for potential increases. The arrival of younger professionals with skills adapted to current trends, especially in technical and digital fields, also plays a role," explained the company's director Radoslav Rezák.
The differences are particularly visible in individual sectors. In the case of economics or trade, workers older than 45 have a lower salary, but the IT sector and manufacturing record such changes up to 55-year-olds. In manufacturing positions, the average basic monthly salary reaches 1,420 euros for the age group from 25 to 34, and it is currently at almost the same level even for employees who are 20 years older. People aged 55 and over are more likely to have lower incomes.
While in manufacturing, salaries have been comparable across age groups for a long time, according to the company, in the IT sector they are increasing. The average salary of workers in this area aged 25 to 34 is 2,450 euros, while older age groups earn an average of 340 euros more, or almost 2,800 euros. Although they reach the ceiling in the IT sector at 45, the average salary remains approximately the same. Older employees aged 55 and over in IT have lower financial compensation, earning an average of 2,700 euros per month.
Salary growth is often also related to advancement to management positions, with the highest salaries in Slovakia being held by top managers, whose financial compensation continues to improve after they reach 45. On average, the basic monthly salary of people aged 35 to 44 in top management is just under €3,800. Employees aged 45 to 54 earn an average of €4,150. The earnings of older top managers are already €500 lower.
