EC calls on European companies to submit investment plans in the US |
Brusel, 28.05.2025 |
 |
The European Commission (EC) has asked leading companies in the European Union (EU) to submit investment plans in the United States in order to gain an advantage in upcoming tariff negotiations. TASR reports this based on a report by Reuters, which on Tuesday referred to sources familiar with the issue.
According to sources, on Monday (26. 5.) the Commission turned to the umbrella organization of European employers, BusinessEurope, and urged it to provide information on planned investments as soon as possible. A similar document was also received by the European Roundtable of Industrialists (ERT). The members of this organization are the CEOs of the largest European companies, from the computer chip manufacturer ASML, through the chemical group BASF to the software company SAP, as well as the carmakers BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The request for a five-year investment plan was allegedly drawn up by the head of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen.
US President Donald Trump said on Sunday (May 25) that after a phone call with von der Leyen, he had agreed to postpone the introduction of 50 percent tariffs on imports until July 9. He added that the head of the Commission had assured him that talks between Washington and Brussels would begin soon. Trump had previously threatened to increase tariffs as early as June 1. He also reiterated that European companies would not have to pay any tariffs if they manufactured in the United States.
