Inflation in May exceeded 4%, the highest in 17 months
Bratislava, 13.06.2025
Consumer prices of goods and services increased by 0.5% month-on-month in May, the second highest price increase this year. Inflation, i.e. the year-on-year price increase, reached 4.1%, the last time it was higher was in December 2023. The month-on-month price increase was most affected by more expensive food and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as alcoholic beverages. The dampening effect was mainly due to the cheaper fuel in the transport sector. The Statistical Office (ŠÚ) of the Slovak Republic reported this on Friday. Year-on-year prices were higher in all 12 sectors (household expenditure groups) ranging from 2.8% in the housing and energy sector to 10.2% in the education sector. Higher prices in the restaurants and hotels sector by 8.8% had a significant impact on the development of inflation, in which catering in particular was more expensive again by more than 9%. The price increase was also repeatedly registered in the miscellaneous goods and services sector by 6.5%, especially hairdressing services with an increase of 10.6%, insurance (+15%), social services and personal accessories increased in price by over 7%. The overall increase in prices in the recreation and culture sector by 5% also had an impact on the development of inflation, also due to the persistent higher prices for organized holiday tours (+7.8%), newspapers and office supplies (+6.4%), and gardening goods including plants (+5.8%). The increase in prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages reached its highest level this year in May, namely 3.9%. Five out of nine food components had higher prices than a year ago. Oils and fats increased in price by 21.7%, fruit by 11%, and price increases below 7% were also recorded for milk with cheese and eggs, bread with cereals, and sugar and confectionery. On the contrary, meat became cheaper by 2%, followed by vegetables (-1.2%), various snacks (-1.4%), and fish (-0.2%). A very significant impact on the development of prices in this sector was still the increase in the price of non-alcoholic beverages by 17.1% (mineral waters, non-alcoholic beverages and juices by 17.6%, coffee, tea and cocoa by 16.6%). After the April price reduction, prices in the transport sector again showed a year-on-year increase in prices in total by 0.1% in May. Fuels continued to maintain a significantly lower value than a year ago (-8%), but this positive impact was overshadowed by a double-digit increase in the price of transport services. In road passenger transport, price growth accelerated by almost 20%, in rail passenger transport by almost 12%. Compared to April of this year, consumer prices increased month-on-month in nine out of a total of 12 sectors, ranging from 0.1% for housing and energy to 1.5% for alcoholic beverages and tobacco. The only sector that saw a price decrease was transport, by 1.2%. Prices remained unchanged in the post and telecommunications and education sectors. The second largest sector by weight, food and non-alcoholic beverages, had the most significant impact on inflation growth, in which prices were higher month-on-month by a total of 1.3%. The price of meat increased by 1.7%, milk, cheese and eggs by 1.4%, as well as oils and fats by 4.1%, and bread and cereals by 0.7%. Fruit and fish were also more expensive by more than 1%. Only vegetables were cheaper by 0.3%. The price increase of non-alcoholic beverages continued, currently by 2.2% (coffee, tea and cocoa by 2.7%, mineral waters, soft drinks and juices by 1.9%).odkaz na stránku
