Russia overtakes Germany to become fifth largest beer producer |
Moscow, 23.07.2025 |

Russia has overtaken Germany to become the world's fifth-largest beer producer. This was shown on Tuesday by data from BarthHaas, the world's largest hop trader. TASR reports this based on a DPA report.
While less beer was brewed in Germany last year, production in Russia increased significantly, according to the BarthHaas report. Specifically, beer production in Russia increased by around 9% last year to 9.1 billion liters, while in Germany it decreased by 1% to 8.4 billion liters.
BarthHaas CEO Thomas Raiser attributes the increase in production in Russia mainly to the fact that less beer is now imported there, so that domestic production is increasing.
However, both Russia and Germany lag significantly behind the world's leading brewing countries. China maintained its position as world number one, ahead of the United States. The report says China produced 34 billion liters of beer last year, while the US produced more than 18 billion liters. In both cases, this is a decline of about 5%. Brazil and Mexico are also expected to produce more beer than Russia and Germany in 2024, at 14.7 and 14.5 billion liters respectively.
Germany has been experiencing a long-term downward trend in beer consumption due to an aging population, competition from an increasing range of other beverages and declining household purchasing power in difficult economic times.
The report also contains some good news for the German brewing industry, as the country maintains its position as the world’s leading supplier of hops, one of the main ingredients in beer.
However, the number of hop growers in Germany has been declining for some time. There are now fewer than 1,000, an “all-time low.”odkaz na stránku |
