In the city of Born, car production will be replaced by defense technology production.
Brusel, 08.10.2025
Three new defense companies will use the closed and unused spaces of the former Nedcar company in the city of Born, which produced for the BMW car manufacturer, thereby supporting the Netherlands' objectives as a NATO member to increase spending on defense sector production. This was reported by TASR. The information portal DutchNews.nl reminded on Tuesday that Nedcar, which produced Mini brand cars, closed its production lines 18 months ago. The new tenants of these premises are expected to be the drone manufacturer DeltaQuad based in Amsterdam, the battery manufacturer Tulip Tech part of the Den Bosch company, and the Estonian robotics firm Milrem. All three companies signed ten-year lease agreements with VDL, which owns the 450,000-square-meter site. Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans confirmed this information on Monday (October 6) directly in Borne, stating that it is an important step in transforming the factory into the 'flagship' of the Dutch defense industry. 'Other companies will follow this example,' the minister added.DutchNews.nl noted that the shift in focus of the former automobile factory comes at a time when the Netherlands, like other NATO members, is increasing its military spending in response to Russia's war against Ukraine. The government is encouraging Dutch high-tech companies to apply their expertise in the field of defense technologies as well. Tulip Tech is already carrying out its first activities in Borna. Its batteries can extend drone flight time by up to 100%. The company plans to increase production from more than 100,000 units manufactured this year to approximately 1.5 million annually within 18 months. Milrem, which produces unmanned ground vehicles, aims to start production at the beginning of next year. The company employs around 430 people across 16 countries and plans to manufacture approximately 150 vehicles per year in Borna. Drone manufacturer DeltaQuad is just starting its operations in Borna. Currently, it produces dozens of reconnaissance drones per month at its site in Duivendrecht, Netherlands. The company plans to increase this number to hundreds, and if necessary, to thousands, according to CEO Sander Smeets, who told the newspaper Financieele Dagblad. According to Financieele Dagblad, the German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall and the Swiss-Dutch company Destinus, which specializes in drones, are also interested in the VDL company's premises. Both companies are already negotiating with the Dutch Ministry of Defense on this matter.odkaz na stránku
