Macron says EU-Mercosur agreement is disadvantageous for France
Paris, 16.12.2025
The proposed free trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and the South American Mercosur group is disadvantageous for French farmers. President Emmanuel Macron made this view “very clear” on Monday (December 15) at a meeting with European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, an unnamed Elysee Palace official said on Tuesday. TASR reported this based on a report by the AFP agency. The EU-Mercosur trade agreement aims to boost trade between the EU and four of the group’s countries, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. According to the EC, the intended free trade zone will be the largest of its kind in the world. The agreement is expected to be signed this coming weekend during the Mercosur summit in Brazil. However, it remains unclear whether the necessary majority will be reached in the EU. French Economy Minister Roland Lescure last week described the agreement as unacceptable in its current form. The government in Paris, he said, insists that the agreement must contain strong and effective safeguard clauses. The standards that apply to EU production must also apply to its trading partners, and import controls must be introduced. “Unless we have guarantees on these three points, France will not accept the agreement,” the minister stressed. For the agreement to enter into force, it needs the approval of a qualified majority of EU member states. This means that at least 15 countries, representing at least 65% of the Union’s population, would have to vote in favour.odkaz na stránku
