Quarantine due to golden yellowing of vines in force in nine districts
Bratislava, 26.12.2025
Quarantine due to the detection of the quarantine phytoplasma Grapevine flavescence dorée phytoplasma (GFDP) causing the disease "golden yellowing of grapes" is currently declared in nine districts of Slovakia. So far, the last district where quarantine was declared in December was the Pezinok district, with the municipality of Modra identified as the infested zone and the entire Pezinok district as the buffer zone. The Central Inspection and Testing Institute for Agriculture (ÚKSÚP) in Bratislava also published an action plan on its website to combat the pest causing the contagious grapevine disease. The institute has issued action plans for all districts in quarantine, i.e. in addition to the Pezinok district, also for the districts of Nové Zámky, Levice, Nitra, Komárno Galanta, Sobrance, Veľký Krtíš and Zlaté Moravce. The annex to the action plans contains a protection scheme and a list of permitted preparations for grapevine treatment. As part of the controls to date, the Institute of Plant Protection and Control of Grapevines processed 595 of the 732 grapevine samples taken as of December 12, of which 483 were negative and 112 were positive. The positivity rate is 18.82 percent. The Institute also ordered mandatory laboratory testing of all grapevine propagating material intended for planting in 2026 for the golden yellowing phytoplasma of grapevines. Like the Institute itself, the affected municipalities in the quarantine districts draw attention to the necessity of a targeted and uniform approach to eliminating the disease, emphasizing that the measures do not apply only to large vineyards, but to all those who grow grapes. Among the prescribed obligations of growers in the infested zone is a ban on planting and establishing propagating stands, as well as the obligation to destroy all symptomatic plants, including the root system. Disinfection of the tools used is also essential. It is also necessary to monitor the presence of the leafhopper Scaphoideus titanus as the main vector of the disease. It is also mandatory to carry out at least two sprayings of the vine against this pest. New plantings can be carried out at the earliest after two years of growing another crop that is not a host of the phytoplasma. Within the buffer zone, the measures are extended to include intensive surveys of symptomless plants and potential hosts, mandatory sampling of new plantings and strict control of grapevine propagation stands. Symptoms of golden yellowing of the vine develop mainly in summer (around July). Depending on the variety, during this period, yellowing (in white grapevine varieties) or reddening (in blue grapevine varieties) of the leaves occurs on the parts most exposed to sunlight. The edges of the vine leaves curl downwards, and are typically metallic and brittle.odkaz na stránku
