| Millers: Products made from Ukrainian flour are apparently being imported to Slovakia |
| Bratislava, 30.12.2025 |
 |
| The Slovak Milling Association (SSM) calls on state authorities to urgently address the situation with the massive import of frozen bakery products from Western European countries. No one checks whether these products were made from Ukrainian flour and other local raw materials, which may contain pesticide, herbicide or heavy metal residues. Slovak consumers are thus receiving products that may be harmful to their health. This was stated by Milan Lapšanský, Secretary General of the SSM.
"Thousands of trucks of frozen bread, pastries and cakes from Western Europe are being rolled into Slovakia and are being sold to Slovak consumers under marketing slogans such as 'taken straight from the oven' or 'baked until crispy'. However, state authorities are not yet checking whether they were made from Ukrainian flour and other raw materials that they bought in the West at a discount and then flood Central European countries with products made from them, where Ukrainian flour is also banned due to the serious risk to consumer health," Lapšanský specified.
According to him, the restriction on the import, use and sale of raw materials and food from Ukraine is set by Decree 364 of 2023 of the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic, which banned the entry of selected agricultural products and food from Ukraine or originating in Ukraine into the territory of the Slovak Republic. According to this decree, import is prohibited, as is the release of these products into free circulation, processing or storage. The ban on the import and subsequent distribution of these goods includes a number of raw materials used in flour production and in the bakery industry, such as wheat, rye, barley, corn, wheat flour, soybeans, including crushed, sunflower seeds, including crushed, and beet sugar. The reason is the use of various pesticides and herbicides in agriculture in Ukraine, which are not permitted in the EU and have harmful effects on human health.
“Slovak mills associated with the Slovak Society of Millers use primarily Slovak wheat for the production of their flour. Raw materials with special quality parameters are imported from EU countries only if there is a shortage of them in Slovakia. State authorities thus have full control over what happens in the field, through grain inspection, processing in mills, and its use by domestic bakers and confectioners,” he emphasized.
“We would therefore appreciate it if the State Veterinary and Food Administration of the Slovak Republic would proceed with in-depth inspections of foreign trade chains in particular and would also require proof of the origin of the raw materials used in frozen bakery products imported to us from half of Europe. The state must be able to protect the food market so that products made from prohibited and untested raw materials do not appear on it,” added Lapšanský.
The Slovak Society of Millers unites flour and mill feed manufacturers from all over Slovakia. It has six members in several regions of Slovakia. It employs almost 500 workers.odkaz na stránku |
