Businesses and consumers expressed concerns about the economy in January
Bratislava, 29.01.2026
In January, Slovak entrepreneurs and consumers expressed concerns about the upcoming development of the Slovak economy. The economic sentiment indicator (IES) fell by 4.5 points to 97.4. The mood deteriorated in all monitored sectors, most notably in construction and services. However, it also deteriorated in industry, trade and consumers. Compared to January last year, the economic mood is 4.5 points worse, lagging behind the long-term average by 8.3 points. This was reported by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic. The seasonally adjusted confidence indicator in industry fell by four points in January 2026 to -0.3. The development of the indicator was influenced by the decrease in expected production and the growth in inventories. The most pessimistic about the development of production were respondents in the chemical industry, who reported the growth in inventories mainly in the production of other non-metallic products and basic pharmaceutical products. The seasonally adjusted confidence indicator in services in January 2026 fell by five points to -1.7. Compared to the previous month, two of the three indicators of the indicator deteriorated. The assessments of the business situation and expected demand worsened, in both cases mainly in real estate activities. Demand over the last three months increased slightly. The confidence indicator in trade in January fell by three points compared to December to 7.3. Respondents assessed two of the three components of the indicator more negatively. They assessed the development of business activities over the last three months negatively, especially in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles, and they announced a decrease in expected business activities, especially in the retail trade of IT equipment in specialized stores. In January, the seasonally adjusted confidence indicator in construction fell by six points compared to the previous month to -6.5 due to more unfavorable assessments of the overall level of orders, especially in companies engaged in the construction of buildings and civil engineering. Pessimism about the upcoming development of employment also contributed to the decline of the indicator. Slovak consumers started the new year in a pessimistic mood. The consumer confidence indicator (seasonally adjusted) decreased by 4.3 points to -26.7, falling to the lowest level in about three years (since March 2023). It is currently 6.6 points behind the long-term average. Consumer sentiment deteriorated in all four components of the indicator. Consumers, in particular, perceived the development of unemployment significantly negatively. They also saw the development of their savings more pessimistically, and concerns about the upcoming development of the overall economic situation and the overall financial situation deepened. odkaz na stránku
