| Slovakia welcomes measures to better protect the wine sector |
| Brusel, 24.02.2026 |
 |
| On Monday, the agriculture ministers of the EU member states adopted a regulation on a more modern policy framework to support the European wine sector. Slovakia welcomes this regulation, said Vladimír Vnuk, State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, at a meeting of the EU Council for Agriculture and Fisheries in Brussels, TASR's correspondent reports.
Vnuk specified that Slovakia welcomes everything related to wine issues and the protection of winemaking. "Because we in Slovakia also have very high-quality winemakers who are collecting awards basically all over Europe and the world. So I believe that this will only help our winemaking sector," Vnuk described the situation.
The updated measures, which were also supported by members of the European Parliament (EP) two weeks ago, are designed to better balance supply and demand on the wine market, strengthen the adaptation of winemaking to climate change, simplify and harmonize labeling procedures, support innovation, expand planting flexibility, and at the same time stimulate rural economies through so-called wine tourism.
When asked by TASR how the Slovak agro-sector can help wine regions from the perspective of wine tourism, the State Secretary specified that this would be more of an issue for the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Slovak Republic, where they can support wine tourism better through regional organizations or district tourism organizations than through the Ministry of Agriculture.
European wines, especially those with protected geographical indications, will also be better protected through new trade agreements that the EU concludes with partners around the world. "It is also good that since we are concluding a series of trade agreements with third countries, these international agreements have certain protective mechanisms that we can always activate in the event of any market disruption," explained Vnuk.
