EU wants to speed up detection of food fraud
Brusel, 11.03.2026
The European Commission (EC) on Tuesday unveiled a new artificial intelligence platform called TraceMap, which aims to speed up the detection of food fraud, contaminated food and foodborne disease outbreaks across the EU. TASR correspondent reports. The Commission noted that, in line with the EU's strict safety standards for food and imported products, this new tool will strengthen consumer safety and help national authorities work more effectively by innovating the way food safety risks and fraud are assessed, detected and responded to. The TraceMap platform will use artificial intelligence (AI) to improve food safety risk assessment by simplifying access to and analysis of critical data. It will quickly identify links between operators and consignments, help monitor the entire agri-food supply chain once a risk has been identified, allowing for faster withdrawal of unsafe or fraudulent products from the market. From Tuesday, the TraceMap platform is available to national authorities in all EU Member States. They will be able to better target checks and conduct more in-depth investigations without the need for additional resources. The EU will use extensive data from existing agri-food systems to rapidly track business models and production flows. The platform will improve the accuracy of screening, speed up the detection of suspicious operators and help investigators detect food fraud and food-borne outbreaks and quickly remove non-compliant products from the market. The platform enables Member States to close gaps, address vulnerabilities and strengthen their anti-fraud measures in the agri-food sector. It also allows for better controls on imported goods, in line with the reinforced measures set out in the Vision for Agriculture and Food. In a press release, EU Commissioner for Animal Health and Welfare Olivér Várhelyi explained that TraceMap will “revolutionise” the EU’s ability to respond to food safety crises and fight food fraud. “It will ensure better coordination between Member States and stronger protection for both farmers and consumers in the EU. Critical infrastructure for crisis prevention and control will help increase the trust of all stakeholders in our robust food safety systems,” explained Várhelyi. TraceMap was created by the EC using artificial intelligence technology that processes, structures and interprets data from various food safety management platforms across the EU. odkaz na stránku
