| Liptovská bryndza has been added to the list of products with a protected designation of origin |
| Brusel, 19.03.2026 |
 |
| The European Commission (EC) on Wednesday approved the inclusion of the “Kräuterhefe” cheese from Germany in the register of traditional specialities guaranteed, as well as the “Liptovská bryndza” cheese from Slovakia in the register of protected designations of origin (PDO). The Brussels correspondent of TASR drew attention to the European Commission’s announcement.
The Commission specified that the German Kräuterhefe cheese is a yeast preparation produced by biological processes with fermented herbal and other plant extracts. It is more digestible and suitable for consumption due to the breakdown of the yeast cell walls. This method has been used without change for more than 50 years.
According to the EU executive’s announcement, the Slovak Liptovská bryndza is a soft sheep’s cheese with a mild, slightly sour taste, produced by traditional methods in the Liptov region in northern Slovakia.
It is made from freshly drained, unheated sheep's milk, left to mature and then crushed, ground and mixed with salt. Its properties are shaped by the natural microflora of the lump cheese, originating from sheep grazing in high mountain meadows. The diverse flora of the meadows provides sheep's milk with a rich range of nutrients, aromatic substances and minerals, improving its taste, aroma and nutritional value thanks to beneficial fatty acids, vitamins and antioxidants. In addition, mountain herbs provide essential oils and antioxidants, which enrich sheep's milk with a sweet, creamy taste and a slight acidity, which creates the unique Liptovská bryndza.
Both new names will be added to the list of 95 traditional specialities guaranteed and already protected, as well as to the list of more than 3,900 protected names already listed in the EU's eAmbrosia database.
Slovakia has so far had 19 designations on the list of agri-food products PGI. The latest were added last August to Muránske buchty and in early March to sausages called Liptovské šialence.
