If gas prices rise above 70 euros per MWh, Italy will start up coal-fired power plants
Milano, 21.04.2026
The Italian government could decide to restart coal-fired power plants in order to raise the price of natural gas above 70 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh), Italian Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin said on Monday. TASR is reporting this based on a report by the ANSA agency. "If gas prices exceed 70 euros per megawatt-hour, it may be necessary to reactivate coal-fired power plants," Pichetto Fratin told reporters in Milan. "It would be a high price. It is now at 40 euros. We are talking about an emergency scenario, not a normal situation," the minister said in connection with the possibility of restarting coal-fired power plants. "However, we must be prepared for this if necessary," he added. Italy has four coal-fired power plants in reserve. The government said last month it was postponing the permanent closure of its coal-fired power plants until 2038 after the outbreak of war in Iran. Natural gas prices rose on the European market on Monday morning after Iran renewed its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The price of a benchmark European gas contract for delivery next month on the TTF exchange in Amsterdam rose almost 6% to 41.02 euros per MWh. odkaz na stránku
