Foods containing insects will be sold separately from other foods
Bratislava, 24.04.2026
Foods containing insect ingredients should be sold separately from other products. This follows from the amendment to the Food Act submitted by coalition members for the SNS, which was approved by the plenary session of the National Council (NR) of the Slovak Republic on Thursday. They originally proposed special labeling of foods containing insects on the packaging, but this obligation was eventually removed from the amendment in an amendment. According to the proponents, the new legislation follows the approval of powder from whole mealybug larvae (Tenebrio molitor) as a novel food under the Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) of 20 January 2025. Separate points of sale should enable consumers to easily and quickly identify these foods, thereby strengthening their ability to make informed decisions. The amendment also regulates the obligations of sellers in distance selling to inform the consumer before completing the order, as well as the labeling of these products for sale in vending machines. "Information on the presence of an insect ingredient must be made available to the consumer in a way that allows him to familiarize himself with it before making a product selection," the deputies explained in the explanatory report. Similarly, entrepreneurs in public catering establishments will also have to inform in advance about the presence of insects in food, in a manner appropriate to the type of facility. The deputies also approved the amendment proposal by Dagmar Kramplová (SNS), which amended the Act on the Production and Marketing of Alcohol. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MPRV) of the Slovak Republic will now be able to register those individuals who only reported the acquisition of a distillation facility after the specified 15-day period. A transitional period of three months has also been introduced, during which the affected individuals are to fulfill the obligation they have previously violated. Several opposition deputies criticized such a change to an unrelated law even before the amendment was approved. The opposition has long rejected the practice of so-called stickers, which are in conflict with the rules of procedure. They appealed to the President of the Slovak Republic, Peter Pellegrini, not to sign the approved legislation, as he has also criticized stickers in the past. The amendment will be effective from September 1 of this year. odkaz na stránku
