| Šefčovič to discuss tariffs with Trump's envoy Greer |

| European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič plans to meet US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on Tuesday. The aim is to avert a new tariff conflict between the United States and the EU, a Commission spokesman said on Tuesday. He did not want to speculate on the possible results of the meeting, which is scheduled as part of the G7 trade ministers' meeting. TASR reports this based on a report by the DPA agency.
Trump said on Friday (1 May) that he would increase tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the EU to 25% from this week. He also accused the EU of failing to comply with the trade agreement and escalating long-standing transatlantic trade disputes. In August last year, Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen agreed that most US imports from the EU, including cars and car parts, would be subject to 15% tariffs.
A Commission spokesman stressed that new tariffs have not yet been introduced. If Washington were to take measures that would not be in line with the agreements of last summer. The EU is keeping all options open to protect its interests, he added. Retaliatory measures, according to earlier statements by representatives of the Brussels Commission, could include extraordinary duties on imports of goods from the US or even the activation of the instrument against economic pressure. The deployment of this mechanism would allow, for example, the exclusion of American companies from public contracts or the imposition of additional taxes on American digital concerns such as Apple, Microsoft, Google and Meta.
