| Raising interest rates helps no one, says Italian minister |
| Roma, 11.06.2026 |

| Raising interest rates does not help anyone, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday after the European Central Bank (ECB) raised its key rate for the first time in almost three years. TASR reports this based on a report by the ANSA agency.
"I am never in favor of raising interest rates. I believe that even in difficult times, access to credit should be made easier," Tajani said in response to a question about the ECB's latest decision. "Especially when inflation is rising due to external factors, it is better to leave rates unchanged," added the politician, who is also the Italian deputy prime minister.
The ECB raised its interest rates on Thursday. It moved the key deposit rate from 2% to 2.25%, in line with expectations. The ECB also announced that the average inflation rate in the eurozone will reach 3% this year according to its baseline scenario. This is well above the 2% target that the ECB considers optimal for maintaining price stability over the medium term.
Back in December, the ECB had forecast that the average inflation rate would reach 1.9% in 2026. In March, it revised this estimate to 2.6% as the war in the Middle East caused a sharp increase in energy prices.
