| What is the opinion of the British on returning to the EU? |
| London, 12.06.2026 |

| Ten years after the referendum in which the British decided to leave the European Union (EU), the majority of British citizens support close cooperation with the European Union (EU), but still do not agree to re-enter the Union. This is according to a survey by the Ipsos agency, published on Friday. The DPA agency pointed out this, TASR reports.
The survey shows that more than half of Britons want closer cooperation with the EU in general and more than 60 percent support cooperation in the military field. As many as 53 percent of the British public would support a return to free movement of people in exchange for access to the EU single market.
However, when the question was formulated in terms of sovereignty, it turned out that the British prefer migration control to relations with the EU. Approximately 52 percent of respondents said that they prefer full border control and more limited relations with the EU, while 38 percent expressed the opposite opinion.
“At first glance, there is an openness to greater alignment and rule-making to support stronger trading relationships, but the arguments around sovereignty – particularly on immigration – remain compelling,” said Ipsos research director Keiran Pedley.
According to Anand Menon, director of the think tank UK in a Changing Europe, the survey confirms that “there is no easy solution to the question of relations with the EU”, with each option bringing “clear trade-offs”.
At the same time, the number of people who say the impact of Brexit is worse than expected has increased, and the number who think former Prime Minister David Cameron’s decision to hold a referendum on leaving has fallen. Support for a second referendum has also risen, with a fifth of Reform UK voters and a quarter of those who voted to leave in 2016 favouring such an option.
But despite this shift in public opinion, Professor Bobby Duffy of King's College London said that opinions were changing extremely slowly. "At this rate, it will be many years before we get to a clear demand for change," he said.
