| Austria's foreign trade deficit was 7.1 billion euros |
| Viena, 01.07.2026 |
 |
| Austria recorded a trade deficit of 7.1 billion euros in foreign trade in goods in 2025, the Austrian Statistical Office announced on Tuesday in its first estimate. The previous year saw a surplus of 2.2 billion euros. TASR reports this based on a report by the APA agency.
The value of exported goods decreased by 0.7% compared to 2024 to 189.8 billion euros, while imports increased by 4.2% to 196.9 billion euros. The past year was “characterized by global uncertainty in international trade,” said Manuela Lenková, director general of the statistical office. “The main factors in this development were the increased trade deficit with China due to significantly higher imports and the reduction in the trade surplus with the USA due to a decline in exports by more than a fifth,” she added.
The biggest hole in Austria's trade balance was created by China, with a deficit of 12.6 billion euros, followed by Germany with 7.2 billion euros. The most positive balance was achieved with the USA, with a surplus of more than five billion euros. The United Kingdom (2.9 billion euros) and Hungary (2.2 billion euros) followed.
Germany remained Austria's most important trading partner by a large margin last year. Overall, the country conducts around two-thirds of its international trade within the EU.
